Yuma Olympian Jacquelyn Johnson reached 5.88 meters (19 feet, 31/2 inches) in the long jump of the heptathlon Friday, moving her up one spot to 21st place after five of seven events.
Nataliia Dobrynska of the Ukraine won the long jump (6.63 meters) to take the overall lead with 5,045 points. Hyleas Fountain, who was leading overall before finishing seventh in the long jump, trailed the overall leader by just 16 points.
Johnson earned 813 points in the long jump, 242 behind Dobrynska. Overall, Johnson has 4,405 points - 640 behind the leader.
Johnson would need to make up 55 points in the final two events - which were held earlier this morning - to pass Poland's Kamila Chudzik to crack the top 20.
Earlier in the day, Johnson hurled the shot put 11.82 meters (38 feet, 91/2 inches). She earned 649 points for the event after finishing 36th, well behind the 1,015 overall shot put winner Dobrynska earned for her personal-best toss of 17.29 meters.
The other event early Friday morning was the 200-meter dash, which Johnson finished in 24.74 to take 23rd. Fountain won the event, finishing in a personal-best 23.21.
That concluded the first day of events with Johnson in 22nd overall before Day 2 started with the long jump. The final two events - the javelin and the 800 - took place earlier this morning.
